US M40A1 Transitional CB Gas Mask

🇺🇲 United States M40 / M40A1 Coverted Chemical Biological Protective Mask dated the second week of August 1993 by ILC Dover on the faceblank and converted into an M40A1 on the first week of May 1996 by M-S-A. The M40 Chemical Biological Protective Mask was standardized from the Experimental XM40 model sometime in 1987, with these models being derived from the Scott Safety contract, which had ultimately won against ILC Dover and M-S-A, leading to the Lightweight design you see here today. This example of an M40A1 is actually quite an interesting design, given that the faceblank of this mask is actually an original ILC Dover M40 Chemical Biological Mask from 1993, and was converted into an M40A1 in 1996 by M-S-A by adding a green Sillicone oral-nasal cup, when it originally would have had a faulty black Sillicone oral-nasal cup; you may also be able to see a few white X stamps on slide eight, that being a crossed out stamp noting when the upgrade had finalized, this of course being 1996. The reason for doing this was the cost, as it was way more effective to reuse M40 faceblanks than just developing new M40A1 faceblanks. Another item on these masks that were improved was the drinking tubes, which were defective on early masks and caused leaks in the mask, and you can spot these by the three Knurling lines as opposed to two lines on the newer updated model you can see on this example, due to it being an M40A1. The white text stamp on slide seven likely refers to the date of when this mask had the drinking tube replaced, that being 2005. The kit for this mask is an M40A1 mask, really nice skullcap harness, C2A1 Canister, Universal Second Skin, MI Chemical Biological Waterproof bag, Clear and Tinted outserts, and an early Hardshell carrier.
