I cut off the cigarette lighter connector and ran an extension from the battery to this plug. I did it because we were towing a 2013 Honda Fit with automatic transmission. The only way I found to set the shifter to neutral was to have the key turned all the way. But that was causing the battery to drain. Seeing as how the tail lights are powered by a harness connected to the RV, the only item that needed to be powered was the break assist. I always nickname it the break buddy, because that is the name of another brand. Anyway. That’s the long winded explanation. When we were exploring the option of selling our Honda and getting a car with standard transmission, I found out that most asian cars, regardless of the type of transmission, can disconnect the wheel turning lock by turning the key to a certain place, without powering the car. That would have worked for us if it wasn’t that we needed to have it out of Park, and if the car lighter wasn’t switched, that it did not depend on having the key turned on. So I got creative and hot wired the battery. To get ready, I would disconnect the battery, and I had an actual battery conector wired just to power the break assist. Then the car battery wouldn’t drain every time we towed it. The break assist uses very little power. But what we learned the hard way, is that you can really damage the automatic transmission if you forget to follow a strict procedure. You set the gears by moving the shifter from park to drive and then to neutral, but never from reverse to neutral. We believe we never failed to do that, but the transmission started to fail. Either we were wrong, or we made a fatal mistake and set it wrong once. We are replacing the transmission and bought a car dolly, the lightest one we could buy, the EZE-Tow from cartowdolly.com.
