He grew up in a humble family, helping his parents with farming and tending animals. Like many Ethiopian children, he often ran long distances barefoot — not for sport, but as a way of life. 🏃‍♂️ The Unexpected Athlete Abebe joined the Imperial Guard of Emperor Haile Selassie, where his running talent was discovered by a Swedish coach named Onni Niskanen. At that time, Abebe wasn’t a professional athlete — but his endurance, discipline, and spirit stood out. In 1960, only a few months before the Rome Olympics, he was chosen to represent Ethiopia. He had no fancy running shoes, and the pair he was given didn’t fit — so he decided to run barefoot, just as he trained back home. 🥇 Rome 1960 — The Barefoot Victory On September 10, 1960, Abebe ran the Olympic marathon barefoot through the ancient streets of Rome. Against all odds, he won — breaking the world record with a time of 2:15:16. As he crossed the finish line under the Arch of Constantine — a symbol of ancient Roman victory — it was as if Africa itself had risen to reclaim its pride. He became the first Black African to win Olympic gold. 🔥 Tokyo 1964 — The Champion Returns Four years later, Abebe returned to the Tokyo Olympics — this time wearing shoes. Just six weeks before the race, he had surgery for appendicitis. Many thought he couldn’t run. But Abebe shocked the world again — winning his second Olympic marathon and breaking his own record! He became the first man in history to win the marathon twice in a row. 💔 Tragedy and Strength In 1969, Abebe was in a car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Most people would have given up, but not Abebe. He stayed strong, trained in archery and table tennis, and continued to compete in Paralympic events, representing Ethiopia with pride.
