The 40th Annual Conference of Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies (HumanDHS) was held at the National University of Distance Education / Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) in Madrid, Spain, and online, from 17th – 20th September 2024. The conference was titled 'Global Vulnerabilities – From Humiliation to Dignity and Solidarity'. The host of this conference was Professor Saulo Fernández Arregui, who was introduced to Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies through Professor Emeritus José Francisco Morales Domínguez. This is Day Four of this conference, 20th September 2024, or what we call 'Public Event'. Saulo Fernández Arregui is Professor of Social Psychology at the Faculty of Psychology / Facultad de Psicología at the National University of Distance Education / Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED)in Spain. His current research interests focus on the study of humiliation as a distinct emotional experience, aiming to identify the particular situational determinants and cognitive appraisals that predict humiliation, as well as the consequences that the experience of humiliation has for the victims. He is also interested in the study of the experience of the social stigmatization and humiliation among people with dwarfism and on the moral perceptions and expectancies that majority group members develop toward minority group members. Felipe Orviz is a prominent lawyer and activist in Spain, known for his advocacy concerning the rights of individuals with achondroplasia, a common form of dwarfism. He has been involved with the ALPE Achondroplasia Foundation, where he serves as a legal advisor, focusing on issues affecting those with skeletal dysplasias and advocating for their rights in society. Orviz gained significant attention for his role in the recent legislative changes regarding 'comic bullfighting shows' that featured performers with dwarfism. In 2023, Spain passed a law banning such shows, which were criticised for ridiculing and denigrating individuals with disabilities. Orviz argued that these performances were not only demeaning but also illegal under the new law that prohibits using disabilities to provoke mockery. He expressed personal feelings of humiliation stemming from these shows, stating that they contribute to societal stigma against people with achondroplasia.
