It is the first of a series of proposals that will eventually link up the business and government hubs of Delhi and Mumbai. The first portion, explained in this WEBEO, is a high speed railway line connecting Mumbai with Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Such a line is vital to keep India competitive in the global market; the republic is poised to become the 2nd largest economy by 2040, and its infrastructure has to catch up to the time. Mumbai to Ahmedabad especially is a busy corridor, with 23 daily flights between the airports and countless "express" trains that take at least 8 hours between the two cities. The new line closely parallels the existing Western Railway Zone and through rural areas will operate on the existing railway, which will be widened to 4 tracks to support all traffic. Some trains will be non-stop between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, but others will stop in places between, enhancing the local connectivity of the line and potentially spurring urban development away from the overcrowded cities of western India.
