In reality, this is a multi-purpose attractor dry fly that looks like hoppers, stoneflies, or even big caddis. GFA means "general foam attractor," in fact. The pattern blew up several years after I first posted a video of it around 2010, when Tim Flagler posted his version with a peacock herl underbody. Nowadays, I tie the pattern slightly differently than I used to. Most importantly, I've shifted the foam strip to the underside of the hook shank so the thread underbody doesn't show. This makes the fly more consistently float upright rather than on its side, and also just looks better. The Krystal Flash underwing, split tails, and googly eyes add a bit more flash, motion, and visual appeal for the angler, but can be omitted if you like, especially in smaller sizes. On large sizes (#6 and #8), it makes sense to add an additional strip of foam. I like a wing-shaped slip of 1mm or 2mm foam tied in as an underwing and glued in on top the hook shank to merge with the body foam strip. See my recent video of the Improved Prom Queen Salmonfly to understand what I mean. Tie this pattern in sizes #6 through #12 in whatever colors you like, both for trout and for other species like bass and panfish.
