Glider Pilot Roger W Smith takes us on a journey through his 100 years on this planet. Being a MOS 1026 Glider Pilot in WWII he flew a Waco CG-4A Glider in Operation Dragoon, the Allied invasion of Southern France on August 15th, 1944. To celebrate his 100th birthday Roger took a ride in a sailplane at the Owl Canyon Gliderport in Colorado. The video shows additional photos from his 100th birthday celebration where he was surprised by neighbors and local first responders to make the day extra special with a parade on his street. At the end of the video Roger describes his combat landing near Le Muy, France where he sheared off his landing gear and impacted multiple anti-glider poles more commonly referred to as "Rommel Asparagus". He also demonstrates on the side of a Waco CG-4A model where he painted the name of his glider "Blondie" which was his nickname for his late wife of 77 years Glenna. At 100 years old, Roger is a humble man with the sharpness and grit of a 21 year old Combat Glider Pilot. The legendary tales of he and his comrades flying overloaded Waco and Horsa Gliders into Axis occupation in order to free this world of tyranny and oppression will never be forgotten. May his spirit live on in the lives of his family and friends that had the absolute pleasure and honor to know him. Many thanks to the Loveland Fire Rescue Authority, Loveland Police Department, Larimer County Sheriffs Office, and Curt Cole and the Owl Canyon Gliderport for making the day special.
