On August 26, 1944, eight American airmen were captured after their plane was shot down over Germany. As they were marched through the town of Rüsselsheim, six of them were brutally killed by angry civilians. After the war, five local men were held responsible for the attack. In this video, we show the executions of four of them — Johannes Opper, Josef Hartgen, Philipp Gütlich, and Friedrich Wust — carried out on November 10, 1945, at Bruchsal Prison. The fifth man, Ludwig Metz, was also hanged the same day, but no video of his execution is known to exist. These were not SS officers or soldiers — they were ordinary citizens who took part in a deadly mob attack. Their case became one of the earliest examples of civilians being tried and executed for war crimes after WWII. Do you think justice was truly served?
