I don't know why I thought it would be a good idea to watch The Summer I Turned Pretty. I guess I remembered how much fun we had recording commentary tracks for the writers' previous series, To All The Boys I've Loved Before, but completely forgot how painfully boring those movies were. Welp. Here we are. I am joined, of course, by my To All The Boys companion Adam. I hope he can forgive me. PLOT (via Wiki & ChatGPT) Every summer, the Conklins—Belly (Lola Tung), her brother Steven (Sean Kaufman), and their mother Laurel (Jackie Chung)—stay in Cousins Beach with Laurel’s best friend, Susannah Fisher (Rachel Blanchard), and her sons, Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). Belly has had a crush on Conrad since she was ten, but believes he only sees her as a little girl. Upon arrival, Belly and Laurel notice Conrad is acting distant. Belly tries to confront him, but is interrupted by Jeremiah and Steven, who go with Conrad to a bonfire. At Taylor’s (Rain Spencer) urging, Belly sneaks out and sees Conrad kissing Nicole (Summer Madison). Upset, she meets Cam (David Iacono), and they kiss. Conrad later gets into a drunken fight as the party is broken up. Belly decides to accept Susannah’s invitation to be a debutante. Laurel and Susannah take Belly dress shopping. At her first debutante tea, Belly meets socialite Shayla (Minnie Mills) and learns Nicole is her big sister for the season. Cam takes her to a drive-in, but Conrad, Jeremiah, and Steven crash it, angering her. Steven secretly hooks up with Shayla, who asks him to the ball. Belly and Conrad argue about his behavior, with him calling her immature and her accusing him of toying with her. For her 16th birthday, everyone celebrates except Conrad, who pretends to forget. Susannah hosts a dinner where Taylor kisses Steven, angering Belly, though the girls reconcile before Taylor leaves. Belly later discovers Conrad bought her a gift but never gave it. At Susannah’s Fourth of July party, Belly and Steven’s dad John (Colin Ferguson) arrives with his girlfriend, while the Fisher boys’ father Adam (Tom Everett Scott) cancels. A drunk Belly tells Shayla about Steven and Taylor. Meanwhile, Laurel argues with Susannah, then hooks up with Cleveland Castillo (Alfredo Narciso). Belly later apologizes to Conrad, and they nearly kiss before Jeremiah interrupts. Laurel and Susannah revisit their youth at a bar, where Susannah has a fling. Belly breaks up with Cam and wonders if she chose the wrong Fisher. Conrad rejects her, and Jeremiah confesses his love during a midnight swim, where they kiss. At the volleyball fundraiser, Belly competes with Taylor, who fakes an injury to help Jeremiah. On a sailing trip, Conrad opens up to Cleveland. Belly and Taylor are humiliated on Nicole’s boat after Conrad texts her. Nicole later ends things with Conrad and returns Belly’s clothes. Jeremiah picks Belly up, and they kiss, though Conrad soon gives Belly the infinity necklace he’d hidden, which she rejects. On the day of the debutante ball, Belly is set to go with Jeremiah, while Laurel and Susannah surprise her with her dream dress. Steven, broke from poker, borrows Shayla’s father’s tux. Jeremiah grows suspicious and discovers Susannah’s cancer. When Jeremiah disappears, Conrad dances with Belly. Jeremiah then confronts Conrad for keeping their mother’s secret, and Belly and Steven learn the truth. Susannah agrees to treatment, and that night, Belly kisses Conrad on the beach. #thesummeriturnedpretty #conrad #jeremiah
