The Ha'penny Bridge over Dublin's River Liffey has become an iconic city landmark. The cast iron pedestrian bridge was built in 1816 and was cast in Shropshire in England. The official name of the bridge is the Liffey Bridge, but it's known as the Ha'penny, since that was the cost of the toll to cross when it was built by William Walsh. Walsh had previously run a ferry service to take people across the Liffey, but the boats fell into disrepair and he was given the choice of upgrading that service or building a bridge. He chose the latter. The half penny toll was still charged up until 1919 and there were turnstiles at each end of the bridge that patrons would have to pass through. Like the bridges in Paris, couples began fitting 'love locks' and over 300kgs of these locks were removed in 2013 as they were in danger of undermining the bridge's structure.
