Historic HIV Legislation Unanimously Passes

GRINNELL, Iowa (CBS 2/FOX 28) - Iowa's legislative session wrapped up with both chambers unanimously approving changes to the current HIV transmission law. Under current legislation, those with HIV face 25-years in prison if they don't disclose to a partner that they have the virus. The law applies even if the disease isn't transmitted and if someone with HIV can't prove that they disclosed their positive status. The changes to the law will make the transmission of HIV a crime only if the person intentionally passes it on. "They're saying, 'take the test, risk arrest,'" said Tami Haught who has the virus. "If you were unaware of your status, you could be arrested, so we're hoping this will remove that barrier." The changes will be top of the mind at Grinnell College during the National HIV Criminalization Conference which focuses on modenrizing HIV-related laws next month. Governor Terry Branstad now has 30 day to sign the new bill.
