I bought and tested the cheapest label maker refills. 4 of them for the price of the 1 Brother brand refill. The only difference that I can see is that the generic cartridge label is a little bit more translucent. The genuine Brother label is a little bit more opaque. It's not much different, and won't be important unless you are trying to cover up other high contrast text.
