At noon on February 28, 2018, Filipino American advocates, human rights, and drug policy reform organizations demonstrated at the Embassy of the Philippines in Washington, DC. We called for an end to President Duterte's campaign of drug war killings, which had already claimed between 12,000 and 20,000 lives; for the release of Senator Leila de Lima, a prominent political prisoner who had worked to expose the president's depradations, and for Duterte to be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. The demonstration was coordinated by StoptheDrugWar.org, and included: Amnesty International USA Criminal Justice Policy Foundation DCMJ Drug Policy Alliance Ecumenical Advocacy Network on the Philippines Filipino-American Human Rights Alliance Gabriela-DC International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines IPS Drug Policy Project Students for Sensible Drug Policy US Pinoys for Good Governance-DC The event featured speeches, street theater with Duterte, de Lima, and Philippine National Police figure, and chants. Among the visuals was a steel mobile prison cell model in which the de Lima figure was locked, and from which she was symbolically freed. This video has gone viral on Facebook Live, at the time of this publishing has over a quarter million views there. We are uploading it to YouTube to spread the word even further.
