In this episode, Mort Fertel explains what's the difference between pleasure and happiness?. Let's watch this entire video and explore pleasure vs happiness also how to be happy in married life. Learn more at https://marriagemax.com/ You just want to be happy, right? But being happy seems to be getting harder and harder. It’s ironic, isn’t it? We live longer. We have more choices, more conveniences, and more luxuries than any other time in history. Life has never been better, right? Wrong. By every measure, we’re more miserable than ever before. Incidences of drug and alcohol abuse, divorce, suicide, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, adultery, you name it—most of these are up by three hundred to a thousand percent. How could that be? Why does everyone’s life on the outside look better while on the inside it’s getting worse? I believe it’s because we don’t appreciate an important nuance about happiness. Modern society provides me with endless opportunities to feel good. Something fun, something exciting, some surge of dopamine is just a couple of taps away. But those taps are a gateway to a private experience, a personal emotion. We’re happy, we feel good, but we’re lonely. We may not be alone, we might be surrounded by people, have tons of followers, and get lots of likes, but we’re lonely. Because “I want, I need, I must have,” and the pleasure that follows is isolating. A story is told of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, whose advice was sought by millions of people of all religions worldwide. A man wrote to the rabbi and basically said: “I am depressed. I am lonely. I feel that life is meaningless. I try to pray, but the words don’t come. I can’t find any peace of mind. I need your help.” The rabbi sent a brilliant reply without using a single word. He circled the first word of every sentence and sent the letter back. That word was “I.” Fittingly, the symbol of today’s pleasures is the iPhone, which of course, we use to take selfies. Pleasure should never be confused with happiness. Pleasure is about me. Happiness is a “we” experience. I can’t have it alone. If it’s not shared; it’s not happiness. Real happiness, fulfillment, and the real riches of life are found in our connection to each other. And I make a connection not by thinking “I want, I need, I must have,” but by asking “How can I help, what can I do, what do you need?” And the deeper the connection; the more profound the happiness. That’s why statistically married people are happier than people who are single, because marriage, building a life and legacy together over decades provides the opportunity for the deepest of the deep connections. And that’s why shortly after divorce, no I take that back, usually before the divorce, the unhappy are connecting with someone else in hopes of finding happiness. But the early stages of most relationships offer pleasure not happiness. And for most people, if they failed in one marriage, they’ll fail in another. Because the key to succeeding in marriage is not finding the right person; it’s learning to love the person you found. In other words, love is a skill, something you must learn to do like anything else. Love is a mystery, you have to be lucky in love, these are the lies of romantics. These are the lies told by people who don’t want to take responsibility and do the work to become a masterful husband or wife. You don’t have to be lucky in love; you have to be smart. And once you’re smart in love you have the skill to be happy. If you’re ready to get smart about love, please, join me for the next Marriage Fitness Tele Boot Camp.
