The practical clay visuals are what first drew my attention to The Midnight Walk, but second was this: you can freely choose to play either normally or in VR, or swap back and forth. It’s described as cozy horror. And there are some horror elements, but it definitely leans more towards cozy, in my opinion. The gameplay is mostly exploration and puzzles. You’re accompanied by a little lantern creature named Potboy, and you need to protect his flame while also bringing fire back to the world around you. Most puzzles simply involve lighting candles, while avoiding stalking enemies. There’s no real combat, but you do get a cool gun that fires matches. Truthfully, this one is all about the presentation. The moment-to-moment gameplay is serviceable, but it’s not what you’ll end up remembering. The visuals, soundtrack, and story–that’s where this game shines. And, although it’s not super long, it is impactful.
