Team Butenschon: The UBC Thunderbirds - A Montage By Kevin Wong
The 2019-20 UBC Thunderbirds are led by former National Hockey League defenceman Sven Butenschon. He has been their head coach since 2016. Butenschon played 140 NHL games, primarily with the New York Islanders. He was a prospect of the Pittsburgh Penguins for several years, and spent time with the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks. He also played in the AHL, IHL, and DEL -- he was the Manitoba Moose's All-Star representative in 2006 and won the DEL and IHL championships. The UBC Thunderbirds are comprised mostly of players from the Western Hockey League, BCHL, and AJHL, including former Vancouver Giants player Carter Popoff, former Tri-City Americans captain Tyler Sandhu, among others. Their captain is former Seattle Thunderbirds captain Jerret Smith. I decided to create a montage about the team. Tonight, they host the 2020 Winter Classic vs the University of Manitoba Bisons.
