Some people who need blue food most can’t get it. Blue foods are edible plants, fish, shellfish, and other marine and freshwater species. They are also an incredibly nutritious source of food. In fact, scientists from the Blue Food Assessment found that increasing blue food supply by just 8% would reduce cases of nutrient deficiencies by 166 million. Zach Koehn, an early career fellow at the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions says a lot of the problem with access has much to do with cost. Koehn says that making the fish more available will, in turn, make it more affordable. He says that there are a number of things that can promote more equitable access to blue foods, some of which you can do with your own choices.
