A retrospective review of Beam Software's 1995 FMV adventure, in which players took the role of a 1940s private detective on the trail of a missing person. Covers the background to the game's development, how it plays, its art and sound design, and its writing in the context of the hardboiled literature and PI media that inspired it. Check the timestamps if you want to skip around. Couple of small(?) corrections - I said that Dame never shows blood or gore, though there's technically a trickle of blood in a couple of scenes (one of which you're unlikely to ever see unless you're just messing about). Also, I referred to Dashiell Hammett as having been "convicted" in the Elise De Viane case, though technically it was a civil court so the correct term would be "found liable". Whilst I obviously wouldn't want to spread sensationalist rumors, I don't think Hammett or any of his biographers ever seriously disputed De Viane's allegations so it's a fairly academic distinction imo. Next video will be Ocean Software/Infogrames United Kingdom's "Silver".
