Millions of dollars each year go to illegal video and music recordings in Russia, which are cheaper and more accessible than their licensed counterparts. Music and video industry officials have been hard-pressed to fight a hangover from Soviet times - when videos and cassettes were smuggled in from the West, dubbed with translation and distributed from underground recording houses. Russian consumers are playing their part as well, by demanding better quality recordings.
