Please comment and tell us what you liked about this video and if you'd like to hear more like it. :) Performance and arrangement by Duo.Hansen Julia Hansen, violin Adam Hansen, cello When Stranger Things hit Netflix last year Julia needed some convincing to start watching it (she is a big baby and is not a fan of the horror genre because she prefers shows in which she doesn’t feel the need to cover her eyes). In any case, we gave it a try and once we started watching, we were hooked! The Stranger Things soundtrack is quite minimalist and synthesized. This gives a lot of the songs a haunting, meditative atmosphere. Perfect for the setting of the show, amiright? This makes performing them, however, quite a challenge for the players (especially when there are only two!). Well, we love a challenge, so we experimented with varying the dynamics, timbres and passing the voices back and forth to keep things interesting! A sort of musical analysis for those interested: Our arrangement begins with the Stranger Things theme. Julia uses the technique “ponticello” on her fast opening solo to add an electric quality to her violin. Adam uses this technique at the end, as well. The voices are passed seamlessly back and forth through-out this section. The bridge is an improvisation of sorts on the Moby song “When It Is Cold I’d Like to Die”. This is the song heard in chapter 8 of Stranger Things. We then move into the “Kids” theme song. This theme is highly repetitive with quirky rhythm changes and some fast fingerwork, after arranging it for violin and cello, we added some dynamic changes and swells to this sections to add some variety. After the Kids theme song closes, the bridge comes back in a minor key to return us to the Stranger Things main theme until the end.
