The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has accused the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) of misleading the Senate into approving the ban on sachet alcohol and PET bottle packaging. Speaking in Lagos while outlining the Association’s 2026 projections, MAN President, Francis Meshioye, alongside Director-General, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, alleged that NAFDAC failed to provide empirical data to support claims that sachet alcohol negatively impacts children. The association maintained that policy decisions affecting businesses and industries should be based on verifiable data and logical analysis rather than sentiment. MAN challenged NAFDAC to make public the data relied upon to justify the ban on sachet alcohol. Ajayi-Kadir explained that sachet alcohol products are clearly labelled “18+” and that manufacturers have complied with existing regulatory requirements, including public awareness campaigns and obtaining NAFDAC registration approvals. He emphasised that enforcing age restrictions falls within NAFDAC’s regulatory mandate, urging the agency to strengthen monitoring and enforcement rather than pushing for an outright ban. According to MAN, the Senate was not adequately furnished with balanced and comprehensive information before approving the ban, warning that the decision could negatively impact the manufacturing sector and lead to job losses across the industry’s value chain. #ManufacturingSector #NAFDAC #SachetAlcoholBan #PolicyDebate #IndustrialGrowth #NigeriaEconomy #RegulatoryFramework #JobProtection #MAN #EconomicPolicy
