Various of damaged cars that were parked on the streets STORYLINE Insurgents clashed with US troops on the streets of the volatile western Iraqi city of Ramadi on Friday. Ramadi is the capital of the restive Anbar province where the US military has launched a major combat operation with 1,000 Marines and Iraqi soldiers. Earlier, the US military reported that five Marines and a sailor were killed on Wednesday near the city which is 70 miles (113 kilometres) west of Baghdad. The military said the Marines died after their vehicle was attacked. The military added that a sailor attached to the Marines' unit, the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, was killed on Wednesday by gunfire. Officials said a new campaign dubbed Operation Spear started in the pre-dawn hours on Friday to hunt for insurgents and foreign fighters in the vast province covering western and northern Iraq and which borders Syria.
