Open differentials suck off road and you'll probably get stuck. Today we do some real world 4x4 testing with my RAM 1500 and explain why open differential even in 4x4 are terrible off road. I have two open differentials in my truck and what that means is most of the time only 2 of the 4 wheels with actually receive power. I feel like that may be a surprise to some because 4WD does not mean that all 4 wheels are getting equal power delivery in all situations. All 4 wheels can receive power but at a certain time realistically only 2 wheels will have most of the real driving power and torque. the ONLY way to have equal power to all 4 wheels is with both a front and rear differential locker. And I hate to say it, most trucks don't come with even a single true locking differential. Limited slip differentials are much better then open differentials . But in a real sticky situation, it too will not equally deliver power to each wheel. Once a wheel has too much resistive friction that overcomes the wet clutches in a LSD, it too will act a lot like an open diff. Moral of the story is if you are serious about off-roading or are seriously off-road you want lockers in your truck to be most successful.
