RIP John Glascock who died, far too young, on this date in 1979 at the age of 28. “Journeyman” by Jethro Tull off of their “Heavy Horses” album which came out in 1978 and featured one of my favorite bassists, John Glascock, on bass. I’ve given my Top 5 Favorite Bass Players list quite a number of times over the years, but here it is again, in no particular order except for Geddy probably being #1 - Geddy Lee Dave Hope John Glascock Rick Anderson Dan Roberts The funny thing is, beside Geddy, all of my favorites are based on just an album or two’s worth of influence. Dave Hope probably has the biggest discography of the group with numerous songs spread out over quite a few albums. My admiration of John Glascock and Rick Anderson are based off of two albums each - Songs From The Wood/Heavy Horses and The Completion Backwards Principle/Outside Inside, respectively. And Dan Roberts - God Shuffled His Feet. Another unusual thing is that 3 of the 5 are pick players. This song goes out to my friend, Helen of Chipping, Lancashire. Queen of the Wild Boars in Bowland Park, who said that this song was easy, so I told her that she was nuts. Believe it or not, this song has been suggested a couple of times over the past year or two and I had never heard it before. If you happened to suggest it, please step forward and accept responsibility. It sounded interesting right off the bat and the bass line feels more mathematical than musical, if you know what I mean. Not that that’s a bad thing. I had a little difficulty hearing what the bass was doing during the chorus, so I cobbled it together as best as I could. I think it’s pretty close. You don't hear many bass lines that are played this high up on the neck and there are a few tricky jumps, from low to high, throughout the song. This might be the first time you’re seeing the Steinberger Synapse that I got a while back. It’s pretty cool. I struggled a bit to get a sound I was happy with out of the stock EMG and active electronics, so I had my guy, Joe Kruse of MBJ Guitars, make a custom case to house one of those Dimarzio-made, Guild pickups that I like so much. I think I’ve got more Guild p/u’s in other basses than I do in my Guilds! I feel extremely fortunate to have found Joe. He’s very close to me, across the river in Beacon, NY. He does great work. And he’s a bass player! He worked previously for Sadowsky and he currently works for Carl Thompson, so he’s got some street cred too.
