CELL BATTERY as A NASAL FOREIGN BODY

⚠️ Cell battery… a foreign body, but very dangerous! This case concerns a four-year-old child brought by his father suffering from a blocked left nostril and a foul odor. The family had noticed these symptoms for approximately ten days. Examining the child was very difficult due to his violent movements and lack of control, but there was a strong suspicion of a foreign body inside the nose. The decision was made to perform an examination under general anesthesia, which confirmed the presence of a small battery (a watch battery) inside the nose! 😱 It appeared to have been there for quite some time, as the tissue in the left nostril was almost dead and black in color. (Video 1) The foreign body was removed, and the child received the necessary treatment and follow-up. However, after a week of treatment, there was no adequate response; Dead tissue, inflammatory secretions, and debris remained in the left nostril. Therefore, a thorough cleaning under general anesthesia was necessary. This was performed, as shown in (Video 2), where all dead tissue was removed down to the level of the cartilage and bone. The follow-up continued for three weeks, and the outcome was very good. The mucous membrane regenerated, with a small perforation in the nasal septum and minimal adhesion—a very acceptable outcome considering the severity of the damage caused by this foreign body. (Video 3). ⸻ 🔬 It may seem simple, but the truth is that cell batteries are among the most dangerous foreign bodies when swallowed or inserted into the nose or ear. They cause rapid chemical burns and can lead to permanent tissue damage within just a few hours. ⸻ 👶 Advice for Parents: Keep small batteries out of reach of children; they are as dangerous as any toxic substance. If you suspect a foreign body in your child’s nose or mouth, don't try to remove it at home. Instead, see a doctor immediately. ⸻ 🩻 Lesson: What seems small and harmless... can be very dangerous in the wrong place.
