From the time of European settlement in North America until the middle of the 19th century, forests had been viewed primarily by the settlers as an obstacle to civilization; they were something to be cleared out of the way for agriculture or to be unsustainably cut and exploited for profit. By the 1880s, less than 25% of New York State remained forested. Together we will explore trees and forests across New York State, from old-growth cedars growing in Middleburgh, New York, to towering Pine trees in the Northern Adirondack Mountains. We will also view champion trees, many living in your own neighborhood, and we will discuss some of the methods used to measure and age the trees. Join Fred Breglia on a virtual tour to see some of the oldest forests and biggest trees in New York State, as well as learn about the characteristics which define these parameters. About Fred: Fred Breglia has been involved in the green industry for over 30 years. Born in Cobleskill NY, Fred has always thought global while acting locally. As a member of the National Big Tree Measuring Cadre for American Forests in Washington D.C., Fred has been involved in researching and highlighting many of the nation’s largest trees and oldest forests. As Executive Director at Landis Arboretum, Fred has been instrumental in increasing the awareness and growth of this free natural resource. Fred is also a regular guest on NPR's WAMC Radio Gardening Show and is an avid outdoorsman. In his spare time, Fred has become an ADK 46er, having climbed all of the 46 High Peaks.
