Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro - Do You Actually Need Stereo?

This is a really nice microphone but being stereo, needs to be used with a little bit of care. I half expected it to resemble the mono VideoMic Pro+ in timbre, but they sound quite different in fact. The VideoMic Pro+ seems to pick out the front sound a lot more while rejecting sides and back more efficiently while the stereo version picks up a lot more ambience and rejects less from the sides, so in noisy environments, the stereo version is only really going to work if the speaker is close and in front. There is a more expensive version of this mic which has a lower noise floor and has better capsules inside, but it costs quite a lot more. I like this mic personally. I can see uses for it; especially now, after trying it out in Menorca on top of the GoPro. Normally I use a Little Clippy omni but the stereo does offer a big sound with a little more rear rejection; plus of course, stereo for vistas. I also played around taking just the left or right hand side mic in mono which worked in some difficult places where the voice got swamped. There is something nice about going from 'mono speech' into a stereo vista. It really opens up the video aurally.
