Growing a Rose Apple Tree in Phoenix, AZ

Welcome back to The Green Yard! We are exploring some of our least talked about fruit trees. In the food forest part of The Green Yard we are growing several trees that have gotten little attention including our Rose Apple tree. Native to tropical Asia, the rose apple tree creates a small, round, white fruit that has a crunchy texture and is apparently sweet with a slight rose after taste. Our tree is still small but has grown almost a foot this year and is still putting off new growth. Hopefully in the next few years we will get our first rose apple fruit for harvest. Rose apples need afternoon shade and cold protection their first few years in the ground. This is the first year that I am leaving my Rose apple uncovered for the winter and so far it is doing great. They can survive temperatures down into the 20's. I also go over mulch and fertilizer in the video.
