Petri Ilvespakka resurfaces from Finland’s frostbitten silence with its fourth EP that breathes with the austere might of ancestral winds. Rather than succumbing to the habitual ferocity of black metal’s blaze, Diaboli opts for a march of shadows — a mid-tempo cadence where riffs trudge with a martial discipline, veering between solemn invocations and moments of reckless upheaval, where one can sense the pulse of something primal, not a call to destruction, but a fierce remembrance of soil, sky, and storm. In its essence, this record fuses the ethos of early northern black metal with a spirit rarely captured today., and even if at times, a rebellious punkish snarl seeps through, Diaboli never loses sight of the greater spell being woven.
