CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- A partnership between the First Student bus company and Cincinnati Public Schools leads to the use of new technology on local school buses. Local 12's Perry Schaible has details of My First Pass from Arlington Heights, in a story you'll see only on Local 12.My First Pass uses a GPS system. It's the first program of its kind in the state of Ohio. There are two parts. The Z pass is a card attached to the child's backpack. Students swipe their cards in the reader on the bus every time they get on. The second part is the parent portal. When the student swipes their pass, the parent gets a text or email with the time, date and location that their child got on or off the bus. School administrators can also access the information.Joe Eversole, the Senior Location Manager at First Student, says parents have responded positively to the program. From the safety standpoint it's great because, if you're a parent who drops your child off at the bus stop in the morning and you have to be at work at a certain time, you can now be rest assured you're going to be notified when your child gets on the bus and the bus is on time and they're safely on the bus. I think it gives a little peace of mind to the parents. The program was tested at Dater Montessori last year. Now about half of CPS elementary schools have it. The district hopes to have it in all schools by January. The service is free to parents of CPS schools this year. After the initial rollout, it will be a paid system.
