In this video I give an overview of the top holdings in ARK's ARKG ETF, the Ark Genomic Revolution Fund. Pacific Biosciences (PACB) Pacific Biosciences produces and manufactures platforms for sequencing. The company’s product helps dig into the building blocks that make up life. Thus the products can be used by researchers, producers, and others to delve into the genome and produce life-saving technologies. WHY? Sequencing of DNA will be a key to the future of medicine. Pacific Biosciences is one of the best manufacturers of this technology today. CRISPR Therapeutics (CRSP) CRISPR is a gene editing company that is focusing on the development of gene-based medicines. In the pipeline today are treatments for a few varying forms of cancer, diabetes, muscular dystrophy, and cystic fibrosis (to name a few). Four treatments are in clinical trial. WHY? Innovation in medical treatment. CRISPR is one of the more mature firms in this gene-editing space and its treatments are inching closer and closer to being marketable. Twist Bioscience (TWST) Twist Bioscience manufactures synthetic DNA and sells microplates to the medical industry. Twist’s microplates are a lot more “micro” than competitors. Theirs are the size of a postage stamp while competitors come in at the size of a deck of cards. What we’re all here for though is the medical part, and this company sells genes, gene fragments and something called oligonucleotides to customers to use them for drug discovery. WHY? Like Pacific Biosciences, this company sells the tools that will be needed as this industry continues to grow. The more research being done, the more genes will need to be purchased for testing, so Twist has them covered. Arcturus Therapeutics (ARCT) This company is a clinical-stage messenger focused on discovery, development and commercialization of therapeutics for rare diseases. The focus here is on RNA, which is what Pfizer and Moderna used for their COVID-19 vaccines. Arcturus also has a COVID-19 vaccine in its pipeline along with an influenza vaccine, and treatments tackling cardiovascular disease and cystic fibrosis. WHY? Again, innovative medical treatments. COVID-19 will accommodate many vaccine manufacturers, and the influenza vaccine market could always be improved upon. Teladoc Health (TDOC) This one is a bit unique for the ETF in that it’s not genomic related. Teledoc is a telemedicine service that allows users to see doctors online for basic health concerns. Got a stomachache, Teladoc can help with the initial visit for that, same with metal health concerns, and dermatology issues. It doesn’t replace the doctor’s office entirely, but it’s likely to be a first step for medical concerns for many in the future. WHY? While not genomics related, Teledoc does offer a service that carries medical care forward into the future. Many health concerns do not require an in-person visit, so Teledoc is saving patients time and money by being that first step.
