The last two fishing shows of the 2017 winter season are set for this weekend. First up we have the Northeast Fishing & Hunting Show in Hartford, CT running March 31 – April 2. You can find The Fisherman Magazine at booth number 100 which is located just to the right against the wall as you enter the main showroom. And then up in Hanover, MA, we also have the MSBA Sport Fishing Expo this weekend which runs Saturday April 1 through Sunday the 2nd. We’ll be at booth number 80 at this show, and we have once again partnered up with Yo-Zuri to extend their free line promotion. In short if you purchase any two qualifying Yo-Zuri products from a participating vendor at the show and then stop by our booth with the receipt and product, you will get a free spool of the all-new super braid from Yo-Zuri. And last up, the April issue of The Fisherman Magazine hits newsstands and your mailboxes this week. In this issue we give blues their dues, travel for musky, direct you to some of the most likely spots to bag a 50-pound striper this year and much more. Connecticut • Holdover striped bass fishing in the tidal rivers – all of them – is garnering a lot of attention for those not looking to tangle with catch and release trout prior to Opening Day on April 8. The weather of late has been a bit cool which has made finding stripers a bit tough at times, but those anglers sticking to it are being rewarded for their efforts with fish well into the 20-pound class both from shore and by boat. Rhode Island • Another week of poor weather is behind us, but the boats did manage to sail a few times with so-so results at best. It’s difficult to get a good handle on any fishery, cod or otherwise, when the weather gods only allow you to sail once per week. That being said, out local captains are the best in the game and do their best to consistently put patrons on the fish. Keep in mind that trout season opens in RI on April 8 and the state has been busy stocking local waters in preparation for this event. Massachusetts • Aside from trout fishing which is your best bet right now to bend a rod, I got word of some holdover striper action in a few spots this week. As we enter the month of April, the first reports of winter flounder should start to filter in, albeit it rather slowly this early on. Going back quite a few years, April was the kick off to the season and there is no reason why you couldn’t scrape together a few fish if you’re willing to put in the effort.
