How To Change A Car Battery And Not Lose The Radio Settings First the health and safety bit. This video is not for children. Take care when handling a car battery as they do contain a corrosive, acidic solution which can cause a chemical burn. Take extra care if there are signs of corrosion to the battery or the battery terminals. Where appropriate protective clothing. If you are not confident in what to do then just take your car to a garage to get the battery swapped over. Take care not to touch both battery terminals at the same time with a metal object. Tools Required: Spanner or socket set, Possibly star key bits, Screwdriver may be required, Cleaning cloth, Gloves, Jump Leads New battery that is as specified. Basically my car battery died the other day and today represented the first opportunity to get a new one, and fit it. I always find it a pain that after changing a car battery the car radio has lost all memory or other functions. Some vehicles can also lose other electronic functionality such as to electric windows and sensors. To avoid this problem commercial solutions are available within a proper garage set up but all I had available was my other car and itβs car battery. My stages. Remove protective cover to the positive battery terminal. Undo and remove any casing, bracket etc that is holding the battery into position. Attach jump leads from alternate battery source to the terminals clamps that are on the battery to be removed. Place the negative (black) lead on first, with positive (red) lead on afterwards. By placing on one lead at a time you reduce the chance of both leads touching each other to create a short circuit and spark. Loosen fixing clamps to the battery terminals and then remove. I had to remove the air filter box in order to remove the old battery but I have never had to do that with any other vehicles before. Remove old battery. Fit new battery, making sure it goes in the same way as the old one previously sat. Re connect the terminal connection leads, and tighten fully. Remove the jump leads. Refit any bracket or casing to hold the battery securely back into position. Ideally re-grease the battery terminals to add additional protection from environmental moisture, dirt and contaminants. Refit the protective cover to the positive terminal. Secure the car bonnet back down. Put car keys in the ignition and check the car starts okay and radio etc function as they should.
