John Mernagh (1770–1857) was a fearless freedom fighter and a leader of the Glenmalure insurgents. He fought for Irish liberty for years before being exiled to Botany Bay, Australia, in 1805. ​We always travel up this way to look at the beauty of the mountains and take in the incredible views. This memorial stands at the very farmstead in Bolenashea where he was raised. As someone with roots of County Wicklow Rathnew Village, I believe it is important to honor the history of the men who stood their ground in these hills. ​Produced by Paul Jones.
