Join Us for a 49er Industry Chat with Award-Winning Filmmaker Carlos Alberto Mendez Velazquez '16 We're thrilled to host a conversation with Carlos, a groundbreaking DACAmented filmmaker and advocate reshaping the landscape of independent cinema. Since arriving in Los Angeles from Mexico City at age three, Carlos has built an impressive career spanning live television, sports broadcasting, animation, and documentary filmmaking. As founder of UndocuCinema—an organization championing undocumented artists in film and television—Carlos has dedicated his work to amplifying marginalized voices and telling authentic stories from the undocumented community. His award-winning films, including Con Máscaras y Sin Papeles, La Pared Humana, and the stop-motion project Encaged Love, have garnered recognition at film festivals nationwide and coverage from major outlets including Univision, Telemundo, and Uproxx. Beyond directing, Carlos is an active producer and community builder, working with emerging musicians across Los Angeles and serving on the board of LXIA (Latinx In Animation). With his new film MONARCA set to premiere next year, Carlos continues his mission to create inclusive spaces both in front of and behind the camera.
