After not getting a good weather window for this one last year (and instead doing the Five Passes trip with needlessly heavy packs:    • Five Passes, Mt Aspiring National Park   ) we were pretty pleased when the good weather lined up this year and we got to complete the trip (as well as visiting the spectacular Fohn Lakes which we skipped last year due to the short weather window.) If you stick to the video until nearer to the end, there's some of the dramatic clouds and friendly kea that kept me entertained while I watched sunrise and sunset from the lake shore. The only proper bad weather we had was rain that conveniently lined up with the day we were able to hole up in the 'Forgotten River Hotel' (the rather luxurious rock bivvy below the col). We walked in and out via the Olivine River, we had planned on dropping into the Forgotten River via the top of the Beans Burn, but the cloud lurking about the tops on Day 2 deterred us, so we decided to stick with the familiar and cross to the Olivine River via Fohn Saddle.
