On Russia’s southern flank, the former Soviet republic of Georgia is fighting for its very existence as a democracy. Until recently it was a darling of the West on a fast track to EU membership but then something dramatically changed. The pro-EU government did an extraordinary U-turn – it stands accused of winning re-election in a disputed ballot, crushing civil society, jailing dissenters and passing a raft of draconian laws eerily similar to those on the books in Russia. So what is going on? Foreign Correspondent reporter Stephanie March travels to the nation wedged between Russia and Europe on the edge of the Black Sea to witness a democracy crumbling in real time. The atmosphere is tense with an ongoing crackdown and cyber surveillance. She meets protestors and opposition figures who believe Russia is pulling the strings, while senior government figures claim there’s a dark western backed conspiracy designed to push Georgia into war with Russia. Many fear the winds of a new Cold War are blowing through Tbilisi as Moscow tests new strategies to gain influence and control across Europe. As Georgia’s last democratically elected President warns “if it can happen here, it can happen anywhere”. 0:00 Georgia’s Democratic Aspirations, Georgian Dream party and Russia’s Interference 1:51 Georgia’s place in the world, and its current political unrest 4:11 Protests accusing the Georgian government of oppression and jailing dissenters 4:52 Meet Zurab Japaridze, Opposition politician facing jail for boycotting the government 6:01 Russia’s physical threat to Georgia, and the dangerous border they share 8:18 Introducing Bidzina Ivanishvili and Georgian Dream 9:32 Thea Tsulukiani, Georgian Dream Minister, denies allegations of Russian influence 11:25 Who is Bidzina Ivanishvili, we try to meet him and are quickly confronted 14:14 Meet Giorgi Bachiashvili, Ivanishvili’s former aide, now living in exile, explains Ivanishvili 16:41 Meet Jelle Postma, who explains how Russia influences societies and targets opponents 19:49 Georgian Family Purity Day, and the overt targeting of LGBTQI people 21:13 Meet Konstantine Morgoshia, and the rise of Homophobic violence in Georgia 22:57 The counter protests led by Salome Zourabichvili, Georgia’s former President 24:25 Why does she think Georgian Dream turned its back on Europe and what can be done? 26:19 Zurab Japaridze’s trial 27:44 Zurab’s family react to his jailing Subscribe: https://ab.co/3yqPOZ5 About Foreign Correspondent: Foreign Correspondent is the prime-time international public affairs program on Australia's national broadcaster, ABC-TV.
