According to the National Institute of Health, acute pericarditis is the most frequent among pericardial syndromes and accounts for about 5% of all emergency department admissions for acute chest pain. In this episode of Medical Stories, we travel to North Carolina, where we join Nancy, a retired engineer, whose love for athletic travel and adventure was curtailed by doctors’ orders to cut back on exercise after she suffered severe pain in her chest. Nancy was diagnosed with recurrent pericarditis, a rare disease characterized by recurrent episodes of inflammation of the pericardium, which is the sac containing the heart.
