Because the blood brain barrier -- a system of blood vessels that protects the brain from toxins and chemical fluctuations -- does such an effective job, it also poses a problem in delivering medications that could help treat disorders like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's Diseases, according to Peter Searson, the inaugural Joseph R. and Lynn C. Reynolds Professor at Johns Hopkins University's Whiting School of Engineering.
