A nanny is a professional who takes care of a child or multiple children in the parent or guardians absence (even if the parents work from home or are in the home doing other things.) When placed with the right family equipped with the right tools, skills and job expectations being a nanny can be an incredibly rewarding career. The general responsibilities of a nanny include (but are not limited to) everything childcare related such as feeding, diapering, bathing, putting the child or children down for naps and or for bed, children's laundry, tidying up the child’s play area and nursery or room, planning developmentally appropriate activities, planning play dates, putting the child or children down for their naps and so on. If time permits nannies may also have other responsibilities like helping the family with meal prep, caring for family pets, grocery shopping and running errands, dropping off dry cleaning or if you’re hired on as a nanny manager maybe even planning and booking the families travel plans. A full time nanny typically works from 35-60 hours a week and a part time nanny generally works anywhere from 15- 34 hours a week. Parents generally hire a nanny because they want to ensure that in their absence; whether that be for work or for personal reasons that their child or children have a caring, consistent, safe, smart, trustworthy, and attentive caregiver all in the familiar and safe surroundings of their home. A nanny may take on all the responsibilities of the parents or guardians in their absence - from helping with homework to keeping a consistent routine, to settling sibling disputes. Nannies are very skilled, versatile and can wear many different hats. There are so many different types of nannies as well. A nanny can live-in or live-out, she can be full-time or part-time, she can be a travel nanny, a newborn nanny, a toddler nanny and or a school aged nanny-manager. Your job as a nanny is not to be a maid or a personal chef. If you are hired as a nanny you are not a glorified babysitter either; you are a working professional and deserve to be respected as such. Many professional nannies around the world receive an extensive and rewarding compensation and benefits package that generally include; a W-2, guaranteed hours, holiday pay, sick days and personal days, overtime, health insurance and anything else that might be offered by the family or possibly negotiated in during the interview process. Some nannies even enjoy jetting around the world with their nanny families. If you love children and the family unit as a whole and have a heart to serve families this could be the job for you.
