🔥 Did you suffer a humerus fracture and notice that your hand no longer lifts? This may be an injury to the radial nerve, which controls wrist and finger extension. 💡 What is wrist drop? When the radial nerve is injured, the extensor muscles stop working. The patient cannot lift the hand (wrist extension) or open the fingers properly, leading to the condition known as wrist drop. ⚠️ Most common causes: ✅ Humerus fractures (the radial nerve runs very close to the bone) ✅ Direct trauma to the arm ✅ Prolonged compressions (e.g., sleeping on the arm) ✅ Surgeries or orthopedic complications 👉 How is it treated? ✔️ Initial immobilization and monitoring, since some cases recover spontaneously ✔️ Early physiotherapy to prevent stiffness and muscle atrophy ✔️ Electromyography tests (EMG) to assess the severity of the injury ✔️ Nerve repair or graft surgery in severe cases ✔️ Tendon transfers when function is permanently lost, to restore hand movement 💡 Practical tip: If after a humerus fracture your hand cannot lift, seek a peripheral nerve specialist quickly. The earlier the evaluation, the better the chances of recovery.
