Students in the Elaborate phase of learning apply and extend their conceptual understanding in a new context. Incorporating Indigenous perspectives, these students extend their knowledge of plants and their use by Indigenous people to construct a mia mia (shelter in Noongar language). Students plan and conduct a science investigation about the properties of materials and use of local plants to develop understanding of the science and technology used by traditional Indigenous people. Note: The phrase ‘co-operative learning’ is used. Since this video was filmed, Primary Connections has updated their approach, informed by the latest research into how students best learn science. Primary Connections supports teachers to provide opportunities for students to develop collaborative learning skills throughout science inquiry.
