Older software developers are steadily disappearing from the tech industry. While 70% of developers are under 35, those over 45 represent less than 6%. Studies show that age significantly affects employability: tech professionals over 40 take three months longer to find jobs, and 61% say their age limits opportunities. Industry leaders favor younger workers for their perceived adaptability and lower cost. As a result, veteran engineers are often pushed into non-technical roles or out of the sector entirely. Despite no official exit age, developers over 35 face increasing challenges staying active in technical positions as the field prioritizes youth.
