2022 Toyota Vios GR-Sport Review – More Than A Bodykit

The Toyota Vios has long been a favourite in the B-segment saloon space, and among the variants it was always the TRD (or Toyota Racing Development) version that was most lusted after. With a sporty bodykit and snazzy wheels it was the object of desire of many a young adult prowling the streets of Subang Jaya, which became its natural hunting ground. But our industry colleagues have pointed out that 'TRD' might as well have stood for 'Taipan Racing Design' because in reality these were just tarted-up Vios saloons with no more capability to them, neither in performance nor ride & handling. Things have changed though. Gone is 'TRD,' and in its place, 'Gazoo Racing.' With a Vios racing series (now in its 5th season), a GR Garage in many large Toyota showrooms and the GR Supra & GR Yaris standing as halo modela, the 'GR' badge means more than 'TRD' used to to the common man. And the first 'proletariat' GR-Sport model is this, the Vios GR-Sport. With a (ahem) bodykit and snazzy alloys it looks like the car it replaces, but it belies the retuned suspension setup within.
