Nalanda: Where Ancient Wisdom Still Whispers (Journey to the Heartland – Part 6)#Nalanda #NalandaUniversity #AncientIndia #IndianHistory #UNESCOWorldHeritage #HeritageOfIndia #LostCivilizations #HistoryLovers Just 40 km from Rajgir lies Nalanda, one of the world’s earliest and greatest residential universities, flourishing for nearly 700 years (5th–12th century CE). Founded by Gupta emperor Kumaragupta I, Nalanda attracted scholars from China, Tibet, Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, and beyond. It taught not only Buddhism but also logic, medicine, astronomy, mathematics, grammar, and philosophy. Legends like Nagarjuna, Dharmakirti, Aryabhata, Xuanzang, and Yi Jing studied or taught here. Nalanda’s vast library, Dharmaganja, housed lakhs of manuscripts in multi-storied buildings. Today, the UNESCO World Heritage ruins—monasteries, stupas, classrooms, and the towering Sariputra Stupa—stand in quiet dignity, surrounded by red bricks, trees, and whispering winds. Nearby landmarks include the Xuanzang Memorial Hall and Jain temples, reflecting Nalanda’s multicultural past. Destroyed in the late 12th century, Nalanda’s spirit survived as monks carried its knowledge to Tibet, China, and Southeast Asia. Walking through its ruins is a moving reminder of an age when knowledge knew no borders. A journey through Nalanda is not just travel—it is a dialogue with history.
