The Macclesfield Canal begins at Marple Locks, near the town of Marple in Greater Manchester, and runs 26 miles (42 km) south to Hall Green Stop Lock, where it meets the Trent & Mersey Canal. Opened in 1831, the Macclesfield Canal was built to connect Manchester with the Midlands, forming an essential part of the Cheshire Ring waterway route. Engineered by Thomas Telford, the canal was designed to high standards, featuring straight sections, cuttings, and aqueducts that made it a major transport route during the Industrial Revolution. It was primarily used to carry coal, stone, and silk for the mills of Macclesfield and surrounding towns. The canal declined in commercial use by the mid-20th century but has since been restored for leisure boating and walking. A beautiful walk! Do enjoy :) My 262nd of hopefully many YouTube Walks.
