Close aerial shot of broken dike STORYLINE: As part of the battle to save towns from the floods that have caused havoc across central Europe, helicopters in eastern Germany are being used to ferry sandbags to plug crumbling dikes along the swollen rivers. In the eastern German town of Bitterfeld, hundreds of emergency workers and soldiers were working to shore-up the banks of the Mulde River. Water from the Mulde has covered part of the town since Saturday. Sixteen-thousand residents were evacuated in advance. On Sunday afternoon, officials commandeered trucks and helicopters to ferry hastily-filled sandbags from a nearby sports field to a dike about a mile from an industrial park that houses 150 chemical plants. With water seeping into neighboring fields, more than 400 volunteers and soldiers toiled under hot sun to build a wall of sandbags inside the saturated dike to prevent it from giving way. Authorities played down concern that the chemical plants could be overwhelmed and release toxins into the water. State environment ministry spokesman Annette Schuetz said dangerous chemicals had been moved out or stored well off the ground. A 30-meter section of dike was also washed away near Torgau, sending murky water racing across large areas of farmland but not endangering the town, officials said. With Germany the focus of the floods that killed at least 105 people across Europe, Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder was to meet in Berlin Sunday with European Commission President Romano Prodi and leaders from Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia to discuss how to tackle the devastation. The clean-up bill in Germany alone, where politicians say the face the biggest rebuilding project since World War II, has been estimated at up to 15 (b) billion euros (14.8 (b) billion dollars).
