If you’re on the hunt for a cheap aquarium light that still performs well in a planted tank, this video is for you. I’m sharing my experience with several affordable LED lights that I’ve personally used across my nano aquariums and planted aquariums, focusing on models suited for tanks in the 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 inch) range. These lights may be budget-friendly, but they’ve more than proven their worth when it comes to growing healthy aquarium plants and supporting thriving tanks full of aquatic plants. Most of my tanks are low-tech setups, and my goal is always to find lighting that provides enough PAR and intensity for low- to medium-demand species without breaking the bank. In this video, I walk through the pros, cons, and real-world results from using five different models: the Seaoura SR616, Hygger 058, Hygger 957, Hygger 076, and the Chihiros A2 series. While I don’t own a PAR meter or lumen meter, I’ve relied on the manufacturer specs for brightness and wattage and backed it up with what I’ve seen in my own fish tank setups. We start with the Seaoura SR616 and the Hygger 058, two nearly identical models that offer excellent full-spectrum output and user-friendly button controls. These lights cost under £20 and can grow a wide range of easy and even some medium-demand plants. They also come with preset timer options and adjustable brightness, making them great for beginners or anyone keeping a planted aquarium on a budget. Despite their price, I’ve seen good coloration in plants and solid overall growth. Next, we move up slightly in price to the Hygger 957 and 076. These lights cost a bit more but bring added features like customizable controllers and more efficient power usage. The 076, in particular, stands out for delivering nearly identical lumen output as the 957 but drawing significantly less power, which adds up if you’re running multiple lights like I do in my fish room. These models are ideal if you want more precise control over your photoperiod and brightness and plan to grow more colorful or light-hungry aquatic plants. Finally, I take a look at the Chihiros A2 series—an upper-tier “budget” light that delivers impressive brightness levels. The 30 cm model pushes over 1600 lumens, which is significantly more than the other lights covered, and I’ve already started to see strong red coloration in plants like Rotala Blood Red and Red Root Floaters within the first week of use. The Chihiros uses Bluetooth app control, allowing for highly customizable light schedules and intensity. While it’s not a full-spectrum light in the same sense as the Hygger and Seaoura models (it uses white LEDs only), early results suggest it’s still highly effective for plant growth. Whether you're just starting your aquarium journey or upgrading an older fish tank, I hope this video helps you find a cheap aquarium light that suits your setup and your goals. Not every planted tank needs an expensive lighting system—modern LED lights have come a long way, and you can now grow beautiful aquarium plants on a tight budget. If you're keeping low-tech tanks or easy-care species, there’s no need to overspend. Many of these options offer excellent growth potential for common beginner-friendly species and even some intermediate ones. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. If you’ve had good or bad experiences with any of these lights—or other affordable models—drop a comment and let me know! I love hearing how others are lighting their planted aquariums. #aquarium #fishtank #plantedtank TIMESTAMPS 00:00 - Intro 00:33 - Seaoura SR616 And Hygger 058 03:36 - Hygger 957 And Hygger 076 09:25 - Chihiros Aii
