After a full season of Hoosier Super Tour it has come down to this! I was able to qualify 6th in class, which I was happy with, having improved consistently through the test week and qualifying to a personal best of 1:53.690. With a Trans Am TA2 and a Sunbeam Tiger in front, my strategy at the start was to use my braking advantage to get in front of the Sunbeam, and then create a bit of a gap in the sinuous first sector before we got to the straights where my car is more at a disadvantage. Luckily the start played out pretty much as planned and I was able to pass the Sunbeam, also using the outside grip in T1 which was decent to pull alongside and get in front in Nascar and ahead of T4. Over the next couple of laps I settled into a rhythm but it soon became clear the Sunbeam was going to be a threat as he made up a tremendous amount of ground with his power on the 3 long straights of VIR. Soon he passed me at the end of the back straight and was able to get comfortably ahead of my car ahead of Roller Coaster, and retain that position before extending it further into the front straight. Meanwhile I could see the blue Corvette of Jorge Nazario, a pretty consistent rival this season, growing in my mirrors and Jorge is not usually one to wait around for something to happen. I started driving more defensively and while covering the inside lane in T1, Jorge hit me after assumedly missing his braking point. Jorge's nose hit my right rear wheel / axle pretty hard, but fortunately, didn't cause damage or a spin, although it was a bit rattling, and cause me to lose a bit of pace after that. You can see in the video a brief shot leading to that corner, as well as the aftermath when Nazario is spun around and has to recover from there. Fortunately for him, he was able to recover well and passed some cars on to a 8th place finish. Following this incident I got into an extended battle with Michael Quattlebaum's Corvette, which started 8th in the row after me. With Mike's approval, I added a bunch of in-car footage his POV. As a bonus Mike's car and driving are super entertaining to watch and listen to! After gauging my weak points for a few laps Mike caught me by surprise with a neat pass in Oak Tree, which turned the tables and forced me to develop my own strategy to get the place back. Mike didn't have any obvious issues around the lap but I had a straight line advantage which allowed me to get the place back a lap or two later in T1, which was also shown on the official feed. Following this pass I steadily gained ground and ended up 8s ahead of Michael at the end. Along the way Tony Ave suffered an engine failure which bumped everyone up a place, and me to 5th at the end. It was exciting to see a Porsche win, with Jared Odrick pulling off the victory in the newer generation 991.2 Cup car! I left really satisfied with the result although I wish I could have been able to maintain my 1:53 pace from the qualifying sessions. This would have allowed me to compete with Bender and Patton for the 3rd and 4th places. Although this was a good step forward given my previous best, from the April Hoosier Super Tour event, was in the 1:58 range.
