For us to treat people in a way we would not want to be treated we first have to convince ourselves that they are different from us. In her short, funny talk Jackie Sumell reveals how we use social constructs to create 'otherness' and how this impacts institutions like the American criminal justice system. Jackie Sumell is an artist, activist and educator whose work exposes the abuses of the American criminal justice system. In 2003 Jackie Sumell asked Herman Wallace, a prisoner in long-term solitary confinement, "what kind of house does a man who has been in solitary confinement for 30 years dream of?" From this question came the idea for Herman's House, an exhibition of the designs Herman created for his own home, a replica of the cell in which he spent his days and the realities of solitary confinement. http://hermanshouse.org/ This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
